Have you every wondered this? Well i have been doing some research and found out why.
To find the first part of why we must go back to the story of Moses and the burning bush. Moses ask God his name and God answers, "I AM." Which in Hebrew is the word YHWH.
Now i mean, i had wondered what God means in this verse. When i would read this i would always be waiting for God to finish his sentence, I AM .... what? What needs to be added. But what is God trying to show us? I AM is not only a name, He is and that is all. Nothing needs to be added.
Now by Jesus' time the Jews believed that God's name(YHWH) was so holy that it was not to be uttered. And YHWH is now unpronounceable because the original pronunciation was lost in 70AD when the temple of Jerusalem was destroyed. (YHWH was rendered as YAhweh in the 16th century) So when translating every time YHWH came up the Jews rendered it change to LORD in all caps to distinguish that what was said what YHWH and keep his name holy.
I hope you are satisfied with this answer. And if you have any thoughts or objections or questions PLEASE STATE THEM. I would love to hear all your thoughts. Thanks!
I have to disagree about when you said "I AM" is not a name. I AM is in fact God's name and you said it yourself when you said, "...we must go back to the story of Moses and the burning bush. Moses ask God his name and God answers, "I AM."" I actually heard a whole message about God's name, but I can't really remember what the guy said. But just know that I AM is actually a name. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are right. I think I got confused when I said I AM was not a name. Because I AM in Hebrew is YHWH which is a name. I will fix that. Thanks you.
